День сурка традиционно отмечается 2 февраля. Считается, что если в этот день сурок выйдет из норы, то весна будет ранней, если же останется спать внутри, то зима отступать пока не собирается.
Самый знаменитый предсказатель, сурок Фил из зоопарка города Панксатони, штат Пенсильвания, сегодня не вышел из норы. Возможно, это было связано со снегопадом. В итоге сонное пятикилограммовое животное организаторы вытащили из его норы на холме Гобблер-Ноб, чтобы показать зрителям, следящим за происходящим онлайн и через телеканал ABC27, который вел прямую трансляцию.
Обычно на День сурка в Панксатони собираются тысячи зрителей, но в этом году из-за пандемии событие происходило в онлайне. В других зоопарках США и Канады также живут сурки, и по их поведению судят о длительности зимы.
Что касается России, то сурки, живущие в Московском зоопарке и зоопарке Санкт-Петербурга, сегодня так и не проснулись. Остаться в спячке предпочли также и пушистые предсказатели из Нижегородского зоопарка.
Традиция «узнавать» у сурков, когда наступит весна, стала популярной во многих странах мира. Она получила известность благодаря вышедшему в 1993 году фильму «День сурка» режиссера Гаролда Рэмиса.
